Sakya Amitayus Practice
🪷 Origin
The "Amitayus Tathāgata Dhāraṇī" teaches that intoning the Amitayus heart mantra and practicing his sādhana removes the obstacle of untimely death and extends sovereign life. On the plateau, parents practice Amitayus for a ailing child, children for aged parents—the plainest love: not for wealth, only to walk a few more stretches together.
Sakya practices Amitayus through the Lamdré view: life is not a solid clinging but the outer expression of merit and wisdom. The lama intones the heart mantra, seeing Amitayus fill the dedicatee's channels with nectar, transforming illness and increasing merit and life. This is, through lineage, adding a perpetual lamp for the loved one.
☸️ Benefits
- **Removes illness obstacles.** The practice purifies the karmic and illness causes that hinder life; body and mind grow light.
- **Extends life.** For the living it transforms obstacles and increases merit and longevity, steadying daily life.
- **Increases merit and wisdom.** Amitayus also presides over increase; beyond the practice, fortune and wisdom naturally grow.
🕯️ The Ritual

The Amitayus practice proceeds thus:
- **Set the focus.** Provide for whom and why (a loved one's health / your own longevity); pay respect to Amitayus before the mandala.
- **Mantra and visualization.** The lama intones the heart mantra, seeing the Buddha fill the dedicatee's channels with nectar, purifying and increasing.
- **Long-life vase.** Traditionally a long-life vase (consecrated water) serves as the cause for life-extension.
- **Dedicate and settle.** Dedicate all merit solely to the vow—steady merit and life, illness removed.
You need not be present—only wish that one a longer companionship in your heart; the lama's practice adds that lamp for you.
❖ 答疑 · Questions
Does Amitayus make one immortal?
The practice is a supreme skillful means to remove obstacles and extend life, yet life still depends on each one’s karma; its aim is transforming obstacles and peace, not clinging to endless life.
May I practice for myself?
Yes. Practicing Amitayus for oneself is a lawful intention to care for this body and use it to do good.
I’m not there—does it work?
The power of increase comes from lineage and intention, not distance. Your one prayer is the focus.
How is it confirmed afterward?
After completion a practice record is provided as witness between you and that vow.
