Sakya Paṇḍita Kunga Gyaltsen was the first "Paṇḍita" in Tibetan history—master of the ten sciences, unmatched in debate, revered as an emanation of Manjushri. In a single debate he vanquished non-Buddhist scholars and also bound Mongolia and Tibet in a Dharma bond. Sakya's Manjushri practice takes this "earthly Manjushri" as a living model: wisdom is not rote memory but the sword that cuts ignorance.

When the lama practices Manjushri, he sees Yellow Manjushri radiate light from above the dedicatee, his sword severing their dull darkness so the mind opens.
