Vajrakilaya has a dark-blue body, three faces and six arms, holding the vajra stake, treading on maras—symbolizing pinning all wandering delusion with "unshakable wisdom." The Sakya school numbers Vajrakilaya among the "Three Red Ones" (with Mahākāla and Kurukullā), specifically charged with subjugation. On the path, external adversity and inner affliction alike call for a power that "pins delusion."

The lama practices Vajrakilaya, seeing himself as one with the deity, driving the stake into the root of the dedicatee's obstacles so adversity dissolves and resolve steadies. For the dead it helps free them from bardo fear-bonds; for the living it clears the stones from the road ahead.

• **Destroys obstacles.** Vajrakilaya's power pins outer, inner, and secret adversity, steadying practice and life.
• **Purifies mara-disturbance.** For the dead it frees bardo bonds; for the living it removes formless interference.
• **Protects resolve.** Practitioners use this to guard the first aroused mind, lest it turn back.

The Vajrakilaya practice proceeds thus:

• **Set the focus.** Provide for whom and why (remove obstacle / purify karma / guard mind); pay respect to Vajrakilaya before the mandala.
• **Mantra and pinning.** The lama intones the Vajrakilaya heart mantra, seeing the stake driven into the root of the dedicatee's obstacles.
• **Three-gate purification.** Per the ritual, purify outer, inner, and secret layers of adversity.
• **Dedicate and settle.** Dedicate all merit solely to the vow—obstacles destroyed, resolve steady.

You need not be present—only wish that one "may obstacles be removed" in your heart; the lama's practice pins that stone for you.
