Sandalwood (Santalum album) has been a revered incense wood in Buddhism since antiquity; Xuanzang's Records notes Indian temples carving Buddha images and burning sandalwood. Its scent settles the mind; both Esoteric and Exoteric traditions use sandalwood beads for chanting.
